![]() Cassidy Serhienko So in an effort to be a little more impartial, I actually waited a hot minute after I finished reading The Queen of Nothing to write a review instead of just geeking out over the ending to a series that I’ve loved, regardless of whether the final installment was worth it. I know, my self-control astounds even me. Plus I honestly have no idea what to say. While I loved the ending, and Holly Black managed to keep the twists and turns coming, I just didn’t love this book as much as the other two in the series. It could be because Jude and Cardan obviously spend the book sorting out their feelings and actually being honest with each other, but they’re really at their best when they’re lying and scheming and fighting (but secretly wanting to HATE KISS). I freaking love the fact that Cardan EXILED Jude and just expected her to know that it was all a trick and she could really come back. Without any explanation. Or a hint. AND THEN LATER HE FREAKING COMES TO THE MORTAL WORLD TO FIND HER?!?! I found it all very hot of him. I’m gonna be honest here, I was hoping for a bit more romantic payoff after all the build up and tension between Cardan and Jude over the course of the series. *This is a mature way of saying that they should’ve sexed each other up* I realize that isn’t really Holly Black’s style and maybe it’s because I’ve been reading a lot more adult romance lately, but it felt very PG-13, and I was hoping for at least some 18A action. Still, Cardan and Jude is by far one of the best YA relationships I have read in a long time. They just suck you in right from the start, and everything that came out of Cardan’s mouth in this book was pure agony (in a good way, obviously). I really enjoyed the fact that Madoc turns out to be Villian Supreme in this series. A lot of the time in Fae books the bad guy is Very Evil and there’s no moral dilemma or depth to the character. But with the dynamic between Jude and Madoc, we see them loving each other even as they try to kill one another. Every relationship in this series is so complex and well-plotted. We’ve seen Jude grapple with her father-daughter bond with Madoc over the course of the series but this book is where it really gets interesting. How do you love the father you got because he killed your own? Their both brutal and uncompromising and watching them clash was wonderful. Grima Mog - the greatest addition that I didn’t know I needed. I’m not sure why or how Jude always makes friends out of people that want to kill her, but I really appreciate it. I will say, I was hoping that Locke would get a better ending. Even if what’s her face was the one to kill him, I think he was worthy of a better build up and a better death. Admittedly, there wasn’t much left to do with his character but I wish killing him off was used as more than an off-page plot device to get Jude back to Faerie. All in all this was a very satisfying conclusion to an amazing series, full of unexpected twists and turns (Snake Cardan lol). Let’s just say, if there was a spin-off series I probably wouldn’t be mad about it.

![]() Meghan Brehon I have developed a particular fondness for the Mindy Kaling brand of humour through close watching of "The Office" and "The Mindy Project". So of course I was going to read her book (and figured I might as well start with the first one, chronologically). Kaling’s voice comes across unmistakably in her musings on topics ranging from her high school experience, to the journey she took to become a writer on The Office, to her defense of chest hair. The book’s laid back tone lends itself to an overall feeling that is very much like a (very one-sided) conservation with Kaling. If you’re looking for a light, easy read, this collection of essays fraught with funny anecdotes is a great choice. (I want to mention one of the quotes that resonated with me - “After all these years with friends who are five ten or taller, I have come to carry myself with the confidence of a tall person. It’s all in the head. It works out.” Need context? I am 5’0”, whereas Cassidy is just an inch or two short of 6’0”.) |
