![]() Cassidy Serhienko Immortal warlock Magnus Bane’s life has been long, adventure-filled, and never dull. Thought snippets of his past have been hinted at it in the Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices, here his deepest secrets are revealed: his involvement in the French Revolution, his witness to the speakeasies and sleaze of Prohibition, and his place in the battle between Valentine and the New York Institute… the first time around. But smuggling Marie Antoinette out of France is nothing compared to his befriending vampires like Camille Belcourt … or his first date with Alec Lightwood. The eleven stories in this collection fill in many a delightful gap in Magnus Bane’s colorful history. Shadowhunter fans won’t want to miss a single delicious detail! I’m not sure why I haven’t read The Bane Chronicles before, I expected it to just be kind of meh, but as soon as I started it I remembered that this is Cassandra Clare and she could never write anything described as mediocre if she tried. And it’s also Magnus Bane and if he was described as anything other than magnificent it would be a travesty. Magnus is arguably the most interesting character in The Mortal Instruments and Malec is arguably the best couple, so getting more of both basically had me running around the house cheering. My only complaint with this collection of stories is that while yes, I loved reading about Magnus through the eras, I only really wanted more Malec. And there wasn’t near enough. THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH. Alec is as fumbling and endearingly awkward as you’d expect, and Magnus is more flamboyant and sarcastic then you could hope. The whole time I was reading the book I had to stop and read out quotes to my less than enthusiastic mother and my older sister who herself is a Mortal Instruments fan. Some of my favourites include: “Still. If one could look this fabulous, one had an obligation to. One should wear everything, or one should wear nothing at all.”, “When I begin to flirt I assure you the entire room will know. My flirtations cause sensations.”, “I’m so sorry, somebody incredibly attractive just came into the room, and I ceased to pay attention to a word you were saying.” And I could go on. Not only do you get to learn more about Magnus, and Malec, but you also get more of Ragnor and Raphael, who are both fantastic. Tessa and Will also make an appearance. I really loved reading more about the Circle and the how the Clave and Downworld made the accords, and the prejudice downworlders had to endure and how it shaped Shadowhunter/Downworlder relations in the present. Magnus has endured his fair share of misery, but his ability to keep caring and still find happiness is heartwarming. I’m quite convinced that Magnus and I are basically best friends. We both definitely enjoy standing out fashion wise, I’m obviously hilarious, and black hair and blue eyes is also my favourite combination (but who can’t say that?). Sorry Meghan, but we’re just going to have to make room in our little two-some for the High Warlock of Brooklyn (although I’d be shocked if you didn’t say the same thing).
